"Words and Music" (1948)

Sanitized and bowdlerized, this glossy biopic of the songwriting team of Rodgers and Hart isn't about the accuracy of the tale. No, it's about all the musical numbers jam packed into it, the sumptuous Technicolor dripping off the screen. Each number is performed by a bevy of MGM contract players...Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse, Perry Como, Judy Garland, Ann Sothern, June Allyson, Mel Tormé, Vera-Ellen, Lena Horne, and on and on. Tom Drake is a leaden Rodgers and Mickey Rooney overacts the doomed Larry Hart, so you'll be forgiven if you fast forward to all those glorious tunes.
