"The Chalk Garden" (1964)

A good script and a great cast make what's basically an overwrought soap opera into movie manna. Deborah Kerr signs on to be the governess of bratty teen-from-hell Hayley Mills who lives with her wealthy and starchy grandmother, Edith Evans. Kerr has a Mysterious Past and Hayley does her damnedest to find out what it is. Who will break who first? Tears, histrionics, and the symbolism of grandma's barren garden make for some very watchable entertainment.
