"Girl Crazy" (1943)

The last time MGM was to pair Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, this boy-meets-girl college musical has a paper thin plot. It's some bosh about their financially strapped Western school having to close down and how do they ever save it? "Hey, let's put on a show!" The real draw is a bevy of great Gershwin tunes, the duo's infectious chemistry, and the wowie-zowie finale, a pull-out-the-stops Busby Berkeley choreographed "I've Got Rhythm". It's a Western themed stunner with high kicking cowboy boots, whips(!), and Tommy Dorsey's syncopated orchestra to make it a musical blast.
