"Each Dawn I Die" (1939)

A terrific Warner Brothers prison picture. Jimmy Cagney is a reporter who's framed for manslaughter by corrupt City Hall Bosses who he's got the goods on. When he's in the Big House, he aligns with heart-of-gold mobster George Raft. Cagney wants justice, Raft just wants out. The fun is seeing how they help each other navigate all the prison picture tropes (venal guards, solitary, the clueless warden, hidden shivs, the sobbing mom at visiting hours), leading to the--you guessed it--big shootout finale.
