"The Sniper" (1952)

A psychopathic killer with a rifle is terrorizing San Francisco from the rooftops, sending taunting messages to the police while the city fathers argue over how to stop him. No, this is not Don Siegel's "Dirty Harry", but it's chilling film noir predecessor made almost 20 years earlier. Adolph Menjou is no Clint Eastwood, but this is the story of the perp anyway, nicely played by Arthur Franz. His mentally unstable ex-marine almost gets our sympathy...almost. The excellent use of you-are-there location shooting gives this policier a quasi-documentary feel. Worth seeing.
