"A Walk in the Sun" (1945)

A gritty, slow-building WWII classic. The simple story: an American platoon hits an Italian beach and has to overtake a German stronghold, a farm, just 6 miles away. Surprisingly realistic and non-exploitative given when it was made, the ensemble cast led by Dana Andrews makes us care for the ragtag group as they bond, combat, and survive. Clearly an inspiration for Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan".
