"The Lodger" (1944)

A decent telling of the oft-told Jack the Ripper legend. In this atmospheric version, an older couple takes in a border and slowly begins to suspect he's the maniac murdering Edwardian London showgirls (not prostitutes, this being Hays Office Hollywood). Wouldn't you know it but their niece, the incandescently beautiful Merle Oberon, is a dancehall singer...uh oh! An affecting eerie performance by Laird Cregar in the title role with George Sanders as the Scotland Yard inspector and lots and lots of pea soup fog add up to a good time.
