"Some Came Running" (1958)

The Rat Pack gets introspective. This glossy drama, another of those '50s movies ("Picnic", "Peyton Place") that suggested all was not picture perfect in the post-War America Dream, has Frank Sinatra as a vet returning to his midwest small town and trying to pick up the pieces of his stagnant writing career. Bitter, restless, angry, he befriends gambler Dean Martin and naif floozy Shirley MacLaine. Though not a lot happens, the three stars demonstrate that that ineffable thing we call 'star power' can keep you riveted, making it look far more easy than it really is.
